How to track income and expenses on Android: record money in and out, add categories, and read a monthly picture without a spreadsheet.
By Weps Technology
Bank SMS and UPI apps show that money moved. They do not show a month you can plan. How to track income and expenses on Android is the habit of recording both sides—money in and money out—with categories, so reports mean something.
This walkthrough uses Treasure, a free Android money-management app. The same ideas work in any tracker; the taps below match Treasure’s flow. For screenshots-level detail, use the how to use page.
Why Android tracking fails when you only watch UPI
UPI is excellent at paying. It is a weak ledger:
- Refunds, cash, and money from home do not all look the same.
- Merchant names do not map to your categories (food vs college vs travel).
- There is no remaining balance against this month’s income.
If you only scroll GPay or your bank app, you are reading a stream. Tracking is building a summary.
Set up once
- Install Treasure from Google Play.
- Sign in with your phone number and OTP.
- Glance at categories. Keep the defaults at first. You can add or edit later; do not spend an evening designing a chart of accounts before you have data.
Optional features such as reminders or auto-fill from payment notifications are under your control in permissions. The app works without them. Tracking is still you confirming what happened.
Record income whenever money arrives
Income is not only a corporate salary. For this system, income is any money that increases what you can spend this month:
- Pocket money or family transfer
- Stipend or freelance payout
- Salary (in-hand)
- A refund you want to count as available again
In Treasure, add a transaction, choose income, set amount and date, pick a category if you use one for income, and add a remark (“June pocket money,” “first salary”). That remark helps when you look back.

If you skip income, expense totals look scary or meaningless—you cannot tell overspending from a thin month.
Record expenses close to the payment
The best time is immediately after UPI success, while you still know why you paid.
Choose expense, amount, date, category, remark if useful. Categories are how you later answer “was it food or travel?” Remarks are how you answer “which food?”
You will miss some entries. That is normal. Log the next one. A 90% complete month beats a perfect week and a blank month.

Read the month, not only the list
A transaction list is a diary. The useful views are:
- Home: income, expenses, remaining balance for the month.
- Reports: category breakdowns and trends—where the money went, not only that it went.
Check Home twice a week. Open Reports when a category feels off or at month-end. If you only open the app to add spends and never look at totals, you are journaling, not tracking.

A weekly 10-minute review
Pick a weekday. Ask:
- What came in that I have not recorded?
- What went out that I skipped?
- Which category is larger than last week?
- Is remaining balance compatible with the days left?
Then stop. Tracking should not become a second job.
Privacy and control
You are storing financial facts on your phone and in the app’s backend. Treasure does not sell your personal or financial information for marketing; details are in the privacy policy. Optional notification reading for drafts stays off unless you turn it on.
What this habit gives you
After a few weeks you can answer the questions that UPI cannot: what I earned, what I spent, which category dominates, and what I have left. That is the whole point of knowing where your money goes.
Students can pair this with pocket money. New earners can pair it with a first-salary budget.
Start with two entries today: the last income you received, and the next expense you make. Get Treasure on Google Play and keep both in one place.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track income and expenses on Android?
Install a tracker, add income when money arrives, add expenses soon after UPI, then check Home for remaining balance and Reports for categories.
Why is UPI not enough to track spending?
UPI is a payment stream. It does not map merchants to your categories or show remaining balance against this month’s income.
When should I add an expense?
Right after the payment succeeds, while you still know why you paid. A 90% complete month beats a perfect week and a blank month.
